Why Mary Jo Couldn’t Lose Weight

The results from her lab work showed us her triglyceride level was 480 and her HDL or “good” cholesterol was only 34. Her weight gain was the result of her body developing insensitivity to her insulin and this underlying problem was responsible for her elevated triglyceride level, low HDL cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

Mary Jo had also been trying to follow her doctor’s recommendation of a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet for the past 15 years. These were the worst selections of foods she could have been eating. Not only was she not able to lose much weight, the diets were accentuating her underlying medical condition. Mary Jo was somewhat relieved to hear that her concerns were not just in her head. However, she was also confused and wondered what she should do.

Insulin resistance is quiet easy to reverse but it requires motivation and effort on her part, since there is no drug approved to treat this condition. To this she replied, “With all due respect, how can you question my self-effort over the past 15 years?” “You won’t find anyone more motivated that I am!”
